7 Killed as Fire Breaks Out in Delhi’s Gokulpuri

Seven people, including three minors and a pregnant woman, died in a massive fire that gutted over 30 shanties in Northeast Delhi’s Gokulpuri late Friday night. It took 13 fire tenders more than four hours to bring the blaze under control, which left behind a trail of charred bodies and complete destruction of the homes of scores of labourers.

Five of the victims were from the same family — Ranjit, Babloo, Reshma, Priyanka, and Shahenshah. The other two victims, also minors, were identified as Roshan and Deepika. Police said the minors were aged between 11-13 years old. Four others sustained minor burn injuries and were discharged from the hospital on Saturday. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced compensation of Rs 10 lakh each for the adults who died, Rs 5 lakh each for the deceased children, and Rs 25,000 each to those whose jhuggis were burnt.
